At the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis, Pueblo potters set out their wares on the fairgrounds' Indian Reservation, where visitors could watch and buy handmade goods. The fair marked the centennial of the 1803 purchase and drew millions of visitors, and its ethnological displays presented Native peoples as living exhibits. William H. Rau, a Philadelphia photographer known for his stereoview series of expositions, recorded the scene on a stereo card that let viewers see the booths in depth. The image shows how Pueblo craft was being marketed to tourists at the time, a practice that now reads as part of the fair's commercial staging of Native culture.
