The caption identifies the subject as a Moki chief and rain maker, the term then used for the Hopi people of northeastern Arizona. He was photographed at the Indian camp of the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis, where fairgoers could see Native families and ceremonial life presented as a major attraction. The image is a stereograph, meant to be viewed through a stereoscope for a three-dimensional effect. Its photographer, William H. Rau, was a Philadelphia studio photographer who made many views of the exposition. Modern viewers should read such images with care, since the setting staged Native people for public display.
