A young Bagobo couple from the southern Philippines is the focus of this view, taken at the Philippine Village during the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis. The fair marked the centennial of the 1803 land purchase, and its Philippine Village, built after the United States took control of the islands, presented Filipino peoples in reconstructed settings for visitors to observe. As a stereograph, the card was made as a pair of near-identical photographs that a stereoscope fused into one three-dimensional scene. Such cards were sold widely to fairgoers and later collectors.
