This view turns to the slender, sylph-like figures carved in marble at the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis. The fair marked the centennial of the 1803 Louisiana Purchase and filled its grounds with statuary, much of it set among fountains, colonnades and garden terraces. The record notes a copyright registration by C.L. Wasson in 1905, which suggests the view was issued soon after the fair closed. The figures' poised, elongated proportions reflect the classical taste that shaped much of the exposition's art.
