Few views from the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition show a ceremony rather than a fairground spectacle, and this stereograph records a Moki, or Hopi, corn festival staged in an Indian camp on the fairgrounds. The fair included ethnological displays that set Native peoples in reconstructed villages for visitors to observe, and the scene reflects that arrangement. William H. Rau, a Philadelphia photographer known for travel and exposition views, made the image, and stereo cards like this one were sold widely to fairgoers and armchair viewers. Today the card is valuable for what it shows about how the fair presented Native American religious life to a public audience.
