The fur cap worn by this Nez Percé sitter sets the portrait apart from the many others Edward S. Curtis made of Native people. Dated about 1904 and catalogued as Curtis number 235-05, it belongs to his larger project to record Native peoples of North America, often in traditional dress. The Nez Perce, whose homeland lay on the Columbia Plateau in present-day Idaho, Oregon and Washington, were among the groups he photographed in these years, and the cap gives the portrait its distinctive focus.
