Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper published this full-page wood engraving on November 3, 1877, showing several incidents from the campaign that ended Chief Joseph's flight. The scenes were drawn from sketches by G.M. Holland and show the defeat and capture of the Nez Perce leader by Colonel Nelson A. Miles in Montana. In 1877 the Nez Perce, under Joseph and other leaders, were trying to reach Canada after the federal government forced them from their Wallowa Valley homeland. Miles caught up with them near the Bear Paw Mountains that October, and Joseph's surrender there became one of the best-known episodes of the Indian Wars.
