Yellow Bull, a Nez Perce man, sits for this portrait in a full headdress, the feathered regalia that the record names as its subject. Edward S. Curtis made the image around 1905 and later published it as plate 257 in supplement volume 8 of *The North American Indian*, a multivolume series issued between 1907 and 1930. Curtis's project aimed to document Native peoples in what he saw as their traditional forms, and his portraits often reflect choices of dress and setting made by the photographer as much as by the sitter. Viewers today often read such images alongside the sitters' own accounts of their lives and communities.
