Edward S. Curtis made this c1899 portrait of a Nez Perce man as part of the broader body of work he began building in the 1890s, when he was documenting Native peoples of the American West before many traditional practices had changed. The record lists the sitter's clothing and dress as the main subject, so the photograph is as much a study of regalia and personal adornment as of the individual. Curtis's later project, The North American Indian, would grow into a monumental survey, and early portraits like this one show the careful, posed approach that defined his work. Copyright registration and Library of Congress cataloging ensure the image is preserved in the Prints and Photographs Division.
