Few Acoma Pueblo portraits from this period carry the record of a named community so clearly, and this one identifies its subject only as an Acoma man. Acoma sits atop a high sandstone mesa in west-central New Mexico and is one of the oldest continuously inhabited settlements in the United States. Edward S. Curtis, who made the picture around 1904, was then building his multivolume study of Native peoples, *The North American Indian*, which appeared between 1907 and 1930. Its portraits reflect that project's aims and its posed, carefully composed style, so viewers today read them both as individual likenesses and as records shaped by the photographer's purpose.
