The record names the sitter only as a Jicarilla man, a member of an Apache people based in north-central New Mexico. Edward S. Curtis made portraits like this one while working on *The North American Indian*, a multivolume survey he began in 1907 and continued for about three decades, driven by a belief that traditional ways of life were disappearing. Curtis often posed his subjects and chose clothing and settings with care, so the picture records both a real person and the photographer's view of what Native life should look like. Today it is read as evidence of a particular moment and of how outsiders framed Native identity.
