Acoma Pueblo, a village on a mesa in west-central New Mexico, is one of the oldest continuously inhabited settlements in the United States, and this portrait of an Acoma man dates to about 1904. It later appeared as plate 206 in volume 16 of *The North American Indian*, the multivolume survey Edward S. Curtis published between 1907 and 1930 to document Native peoples in words and images. Curtis often posed his subjects in traditional dress against plain backdrops, so the picture reflects both his artistic choices and the era's ideas about what "authentic" Native life should look like.
