An Acoma woman, photographed head-and-shoulders and facing the camera, is one of the Edward S. Curtis portraits held by the Library of Congress. Curtis made his large body of Native American portraits in the early 1900s, working with a commitment to recording traditional dress, hairstyles and facial features that he feared were disappearing. Acoma Pueblo, perched on a mesa in west-central New Mexico, is among the oldest continuously inhabited communities in the United States, and its people were frequent subjects of his camera. Viewers today often read such images with caution, since Curtis staged and retouched many of his sitters.
