Shows As He Goes is a half-length portrait of a man turned to the right, with his bare chest and shoulders filling much of the frame. It belongs to Edward S. Curtis's effort, begun around 1900, to record Native American peoples across the West in photographs and written accounts. Curtis often posed his subjects against plain backgrounds and chose clothing, props and poses to suit his ideas of traditional life, so the portrait reflects his artistic choices as well as his sitter. The image is catalogued with the Library of Congress's Edward S. Curtis Collection, where it helps researchers study how early twentieth-century portraiture shaped public views of Native Americans.
