Painted at Nespelem, Washington, where Chief Joseph lived on the Colville Reservation after the Nez Percé War of 1877, this portrait shows him head and shoulders, facing the viewer. It is a color halftone reproduction of an oil painting by E.A. Burbank, who was working in that community when he made it. Joseph, a leader of the Wallowa band, had become a national figure during his people's flight toward Canada and their surrender that autumn, and his steady, dignified bearing made him a common subject for artists and photographers. The Chicago Colortype Company issued the print in the late 1890s, and the original painting later belonged to the collection of Edward E. Ayer in Chicago.
