Acoma Pueblo, a village on a mesa in west-central New Mexico, sets this portrait apart from the many Curtis images of Native sitters, and the record highlights the woman's clothing and jewelry. Edward S. Curtis made the photograph around 1905 for *The North American Indian*, where it appears as plate 572 in a supplement volume. Curtis often posed his subjects in traditional dress, hoping to preserve what he saw as disappearing customs, so the picture documents Acoma adornment as much as it portrays an individual. Acoma is among the oldest continuously inhabited communities in the United States.
