Identified in its record as a Nespilim woman, this portrait dates to about 1905 and comes from Edward S. Curtis's work for *The North American Indian*. The Nespelem, whose name is also spelled Nespilim, are a Salishan-speaking people of the Columbia Plateau in north-central Washington, and their name later came to be used for a town on the Colville Reservation. The image appeared as plate 245 in the supplement to volume 7, published in Seattle between 1907 and 1930. Curtis's portraits of this period were carefully composed and often posed, so they reflect his choices as much as his subjects' everyday lives.
