A Navajo woman, photographed around 1904, is the sitter here, and the catalog's subject headings single out her jewelry as a feature of the portrait. Edward S. Curtis made the image during the years he was documenting Native peoples of North America for his multivolume work *The North American Indian*, which began appearing in 1907. Silver and turquoise jewelry was an established part of Navajo craft by that time, and Curtis often gave close attention to such adornment, so the pieces she wears are worth a careful look alongside her expression and pose.
