Nesjaja Hatali, identified in the record as a Navajo shaman, is the sitter, which sets this portrait apart from Curtis's more general views of Navajo life. Edward S. Curtis made the photograph around 1904, early in his long project to document Indigenous peoples of North America. It was later reproduced as plate 31 in a supplement to *The North American Indian*, the multivolume work Curtis published in Seattle between 1907 and 1930. Curtis's portraits of this period were often posed and carefully lit, so it is worth looking closely at the setting, the clothing and the sitter's expression.
