Curtis titled this view "At the shrine," placing his Navajo subject before a place of prayer rather than in a studio portrait. The picture dates to about 1904 and was later published as plate 30 in a supplementary volume of *The North American Indian*, the multi-volume project Curtis pursued from 1907 to 1930 with financial backing from J. P. Morgan. Curtis often arranged his subjects and props for effect, so the scene reflects his choices as much as everyday religious practice. Today it serves both as a record of Navajo spiritual life in the early twentieth century and as an example of how outside photographers framed Indigenous ceremony for a largely non-Native audience.
