Titled "Navaho Belle," this c1904 portrait belongs to Edward S. Curtis's broader effort to document Native peoples of the American West. Between about 1900 and 1930, Curtis photographed Indigenous communities for his multivolume work *The North American Indian*, and his portraits were often posed and carefully lit to emphasize dignity and traditional appearance. The title reflects the romantic, idealizing language common at the time, so today viewers read such pictures both as a record of Navajo women of the period and as a window onto how outside photographers framed their subjects.
