Edward S. Curtis made this portrait around 1904, part of his larger effort to document Native American peoples across the West in the early twentieth century. The title, "The daughter of the desert," frames the young Navajo woman as a figure of the land itself, a romantic phrasing typical of Curtis's era. Curtis worked with a large collection of photographs, and his images of Navajo people from this period are now held by the Library of Congress, where they are studied both for their artistry and for the ways they shaped public ideas about Indigenous life at the time.
