Curtis gave this image a title that places it deep within a canyon, a setting that appears again and again in his Southwest photographs of the Navajo, or Diné, people. Around 1904, Curtis was building a broad visual record of Native communities across western North America, work that would later fill the twenty volumes of *The North American Indian*. Here the sheer canyon walls dwarf the figures, so the land itself becomes part of the story. Curtis's pictorial style, with its soft tones and careful composition, shaped how many Americans of the period imagined the Southwest.
