Edward S. Curtis made this c1904 portrait of a Navajo woman, one of the many sitters he photographed during his long project documenting Native American peoples of the American West. Curtis worked in the early twentieth century, when he traveled widely to record what he considered vanishing traditions, and his studio-style portraits were often staged with careful attention to dress, jewelry and pose. The title "Navaho matron" points to a married, senior woman within her community, a status the portrait itself quietly suggests. Viewers today should weigh such images with care, since Curtis's choices of costume and setting shaped how his subjects were presented to the public.
