Hastobiga, a Navajo medicine man, sits for this portrait made around 1904 by Edward S. Curtis, whose effort to document Native peoples across the American West produced the multivolume series *The North American Indian*. The photograph appeared as plate 35 in the supplementary first volume, part of a series issued from Seattle between 1907 and 1930. Curtis's portraits were carefully composed and often reflected his romantic view of traditions he believed were vanishing, so the posing and setting are worth noticing alongside the sitter's own presence.
