A man of the Nespelim people, who lived in the Columbia Plateau region of north-central Washington, sits for this portrait made around 1904. Edward S. Curtis took it as part of his multi-volume effort, *The North American Indian*, to record Native American peoples through portraits and written ethnographic accounts. This image appeared as plate 244 in the supplement to volume 7, published in the years when Curtis's work reached its widest readership. Like much of Curtis's portraiture, it reflects his staging choices and his aim of preserving what he saw as vanishing traditions, so it is worth viewing alongside the historical context of the project.
