Edward S. Curtis made this portrait of an unnamed Navajo man around 1904, during the years he was producing his multivolume series The North American Indian. The record gives no name for the sitter, which is common in Curtis's work of this period, where individuals were often identified only by their tribe. Curtis worked in a style that blended documentary aim with carefully staged composition, and his portraits of this era were made to record traditional dress and appearance as he understood them. The print is held in the Library of Congress's Edward S. Curtis Collection.
