Shot around 1904, this portrait shows a young Navajo girl in the Southwest, one of the many children Edward S. Curtis photographed during his fieldwork. Curtis was then at the start of his ambitious multivolume project, *The North American Indian*, which aimed to record Native peoples through portraits, ceremonies, and daily life. His studio-like images often posed subjects against plain backgrounds, and they are now read both as artistic work and as a record shaped by the photographer's own choices. Looking closely at this print, viewers can consider how Curtis framed childhood and cultural identity at a time of rapid change in the region.
