A young Cheyenne girl, shown in traditional clothing and jewelry, is the focus of this portrait made around 1905 by Edward S. Curtis. It was published as plate 212 in the supplement to volume six of *The North American Indian*, Curtis's multivolume survey that appeared between 1907 and 1930. Curtis aimed to document Native American peoples before what he considered their traditional ways disappeared, and his portraits often emphasized dress, ornament and composed dignity. Today the image is valued for its detail in the girl's clothing and jewelry, though historians also read Curtis's posed and staged portraits with a critical eye.
