Titled "The Cheyenne Belle," this c1904 portrait focuses on a Cheyenne woman, with the jewelry noted in its record as a key part of the image. Edward S. Curtis made it during the years he was documenting Native peoples of the American West for his multivolume work *The North American Indian*, which paired photogravures with ethnographic text. Curtis often posed his sitters in traditional dress and adornment, so the ornaments here are worth a close look as records of personal style and material culture at the turn of the twentieth century. The print is held by the Library of Congress as part of the Curtis Collection.
