The sitter in this portrait is identified only as Judith, a Mohave woman, in a print Edward S. Curtis made around 1903. Curtis was then at the height of his project to record Native peoples of North America through portraits and ethnographic detail, a work he would eventually publish as *The North American Indian* in twenty volumes between 1907 and 1930. The Mohave, whose homeland lay along the lower Colorado River, were among the many communities he photographed during these years. Portraits from this effort reflect Curtis's artistic choices and the conditions of his fieldwork as much as the sitters themselves, so they are worth viewing with that context in mind.
