A portrait of a Mohave woman named Judith, made around 1903, is catalogued as number 144 in Edward S. Curtis's series of Native American photographs. Curtis spent decades documenting Indigenous peoples across the American West for *The North American Indian*, a multivolume work he began publishing in 1907, and this image appeared in one of its supplement volumes. The Mohave, whose homeland lay along the lower Colorado River in what is now Arizona and California, were among the groups he recorded. Portraits like this one reflect his effort to preserve individual faces and names within a culture he believed was changing rapidly.
