Titled simply "A Mohave type," this portrait is one of the images Edward S. Curtis made of Mohave people around 1903, while he was assembling the work that became *The North American Indian*. The Mohave lived along the lower Colorado River, in the area that is now Arizona, California and Nevada, and their traditional way of life was under heavy pressure from outside settlement in those years. Curtis usually presented sitters as representative "types" rather than as named individuals, which reflects the ethnographic goals of his project. Today the picture is as much a record of how photographers of that era framed Native people as it is of the people themselves.
