Quniaika, a Mohave woman, is the sitter in this portrait, which Edward S. Curtis made around 1903 and later published as plate 60 in the supplement to *The North American Indian*. Curtis worked among the Mohave along the Colorado River, and his portraits from this period aimed to record traditional dress and personal adornment before those practices changed further under pressure from American settlement. The record classes the picture under clothing and dress, so the viewer's attention naturally falls on the garments and ornaments, which Curtis documented as carefully as the face.
