Mosa, a Mohave woman, wears painted designs on her face and jewelry in this portrait, the kind of personal adornment Edward S. Curtis set out to record. He made the image around 1903, and it later appeared as plate 61 in the supplement to *The North American Indian*, his multivolume survey published in Seattle from 1907 to 1930. Curtis traveled widely to document Native peoples whom he believed were changing quickly, and his portraits often emphasize ceremonial dress and ornament. The Mohave lived along the Colorado River in what is now Arizona and California, and the face painting and jewelry here offer a close look at the dress and presentation of their women at the start of the twentieth century.
