Identified in its record only as Mosa, this portrait is one of Edward S. Curtis's studies of Mohave people, made around 1904 along the lower Colorado River. Curtis photographed many Native communities in the early 1900s for his multivolume work *The North American Indian*, and his sitters were often posed in calm, direct portraits meant to record individual faces and dress. The Mohave, whose homeland spanned the river valley in present-day Arizona and California, were known for farming the river's floodplain. The print is catalogued as Curtis number 145 and is held by the Library of Congress as part of the Curtis Collection.
