This portrait is of a Mohave man named Espon Unzo Owa, photographed around 1903 by Edward S. Curtis, whose catalog number for the image is 142. The Mohave lived along the lower Colorado River, where they farmed the river floodplain, and the record's subject headings highlight clothing and dress, a focus of Curtis's work. Curtis photographed many Native nations for his multivolume project *The North American Indian*, which he began publishing in 1907. His portraits often combined careful composition with a deliberate attention to traditional dress, so the sitter's clothing and bearing are central to how the picture presents its subject.
