An Apache girl poses with an infant bound in a cradleboard, the carrier that Apache and many other Native families used to hold and transport babies. Edward S. Curtis made the photograph around 1903, early in his multivolume project *The North American Indian*, which he began in 1900 with financial backing from J.P. Morgan. Curtis aimed to record what he regarded as traditional ways of life, so the picture documents domestic routines and dress, though its staging reflects his own choices as a photographer. The Library of Congress holds the print as part of his collection.
