The record names the sitter as Chideh, an Apache, and the subject list highlights jewelry, which sets this portrait's focus on personal adornment rather than setting. Edward S. Curtis made it around 1903 as part of his project to document Native peoples of North America, and it was later published as plate 18 in the supplement to *The North American Indian* (1907-1930). Curtis often arranged his sitters' clothing and ornaments for the camera, so the jewelry here reflects both the sitter's own dress and his staging choices. Viewers today read such images both as records of Apache material culture and as products of a photographer's particular vision of his subjects.
