Among Edward S. Curtis's many studies of Native life, this one focuses on the ordinary labor of getting water. Curtis made the picture around 1903 and later published it as plate 10 in a supplementary volume of *The North American Indian*, his multivolume survey of Native peoples of the American West and beyond. Like much of his work, it reflects his effort to record traditional ways of life, though many of his scenes were arranged for the camera rather than caught as they happened. Water gathering was a constant, physical part of daily life for Apache households, and the picture treats that routine as a subject worth documenting in its own right.
