Horses are the focus here, and the title, "The lost trail," points to a scene of riders searching for a route rather than moving with purpose. Edward S. Curtis made the picture around 1903, when he was documenting Apache life in the Southwest for his larger project. It was later published as plate 19 in the supplement volume of *The North American Indian*, the multivolume series he issued between 1907 and 1930. Curtis often arranged his subjects and settings for the camera, so the scene reflects his artistic choices as much as a single daily moment. Viewers today usually read it as a record of the horse culture that shaped Apache life in that period.
