Sigesh, an Apache sitter, appears here wearing jewelry, which the catalog lists as a subject in its own right. Edward S. Curtis made the portrait around 1904, during the years he was photographing Native peoples across the West for *The North American Indian*, a multivolume work published from 1907 to 1930. This image appeared as plate 6 in the supplementary first volume. The catalog's emphasis on the jewelry suggests that Curtis's record of personal adornment was as important to the project as the portraits themselves.
