Titled "At the ford," this c1903 print presents Apache figures at a water crossing, a subject Edward S. Curtis returned to in his wider work. It is numbered 130 in Curtis's catalog, part of the large photographic project he pursued from about 1900 to record Native peoples across North America. Curtis often arranged his subjects and scenes for the camera, so the setting and poses should be read as composed rather than as candid records of daily life. The print is held in the Library of Congress's Edward S. Curtis Collection, where it shows how one photographer framed Apache people for audiences of his era.
