Gennetoa, whose name appears in the title as "the Renegade," is one of the Apache portraits Edward S. Curtis made around 1904 for his effort to record Native peoples of North America. The label reflects how U.S. Army and government officials described Apache men who had fled reservations or resisted military campaigns in the 1880s, so the word tells you as much about the sitter's critics as about the sitter. The photograph was published as plate 12 in the supplementary volume of *The North American Indian*, which Curtis issued in parts from 1907 to 1930. Curtis often posed his subjects in carefully arranged compositions, so the portrait reflects his choices as much as the sitter's own presentation.
