Riders on horseback give this portrait its motion, and the title "Desert Rovers" frames the group as people of open, arid country rather than as a studio arrangement. Edward S. Curtis made it around 1903 as part of his effort to document Native American life before what he saw as its decline. It was later published as plate 3 in the supplemental volume of *The North American Indian*, the multi-volume series he produced between 1907 and 1930. Apache horsemanship and the desert landscape were recurring subjects in his work, and the picture shows how he combined portraiture with scenes of daily life.
