This portrait shows an Apache infant secured in a cradleboard, the traditional carrier that held babies snug and upright while their mothers worked, traveled, and tended camp. Edward S. Curtis made the photograph around 1903 for his multivolume survey *The North American Indian*, where it appeared as a supplemental plate. Curtis's project aimed to record Native life in the early twentieth century, when he believed many traditions were disappearing, and his carefully composed images often present their subjects in settings chosen by the photographer. The cradleboard itself is worth a close look, since its shape and fastenings reflect the practical needs of a mobile way of life.
