The title, "Apache land," points to the landscape itself as much as to the people, which sets this print apart from Curtis's portraits of individuals. Edward S. Curtis made it around 1903 and catalogued it as no. 133 in his large project to document Native North American peoples. It was later published as plate 4 in a supplemental volume of *The North American Indian*, the multivolume series Curtis issued between 1907 and 1930. Curtis often combined photographs of people with views of the land they lived on, a choice that reflected his belief that a people's surroundings were part of their history and identity.
