Edward S. Curtis made this portrait of a man named Jack Shiggie around 1903, and it is numbered 122 in Curtis's own series. The record does not say which community Shiggie belonged to or where the sitting took place, so the picture is best understood through Curtis's broader project. In those years he was building *The North American Indian*, a multivolume survey that paired portraits with ethnographic text and photogravure plates. His close, carefully lit individual portraits became one of its central forms, and today viewers weigh them both for their craft and for the posed, selective picture of Native life they offered an audience of the time.
