A baby bound snugly in a cradleboard is the focus of this portrait, which the Library of Congress dates to about 1899. Edward S. Curtis made it during his long project to record Native peoples of North America, and it appeared as plate 266 in the supplement to *The North American Indian*, published in Seattle between 1907 and 1930. The cradleboard, a rigid frame that many Native families used to carry and hold infants, shows how an everyday object shaped child care among the Nez Percé and other nations of the Northwest. Curtis's photogravures were reproduced in limited editions, so the print also reflects the careful composition and publishing ambitions behind the series.
