The record identifies the sitter only by the title "Sawyer," so the name may be a personal name or a nickname rather than a description of his work. The print is one of Edward S. Curtis's portraits of Nez Perce people, made around 1905 during the years he was documenting Native communities of the Northwest for his multivolume work *The North American Indian*. Curtis typically posed his sitters against plain backgrounds to focus attention on the face, dress, and bearing of the individual. The Nez Perce, who lived on the Columbia Plateau and had been pressed onto reservation land after the 1877 war, were among the many nations Curtis photographed in this period.
